6.3.4 Underground Thermal Energy Storage
Underground heat storage, or underground thermal energy storage (UTES), has storing temperature range from around 0 °C to up to 40-50 °C.
UTES systems have been demonstrated in many cases to be advantageous for energy management to provide good economic returns.
For example, UTES sys- tems have been successfully integrated with heating, cooling, and air conditioning applications in many projects (Kizilkan and Dincer, 2012).
